Granite is a terrific way to add a touch of style, or a sense of sophistication, to any countertop. Granite is durable, easy to clean, simple to maintain and is impermeable to water; it also adds a certain ‘WOW’ factor to any bathroom or kitchen. Here are some tips to get you started in making a Granite purchase.
Measure Your Countertops
First, you need to accurately measure your countertops, and then sketch a diagram of their dimensions. If replacing existing countertops, simply measure the width, length and depth of the existing countertop. However, if you are measuring countertops for new counters, be sure to add a couple of inches on each side - to allow overhang of the countertops.
Compare, Compare - Then Compare Some More
Visit as many countertop dealers as you can, in order to find the designs and styles that are most appealing to you. This will also help you compare the prices of various dealers’ granite countertops. When visiting a granite countertop dealer, ask them what process is used to cut their granite countertops.
Preferably, you want a dealer that uses a CNC machine to cut their granite; CNC machines provide for much higher-quality cuts, straight lines and polish on the edges.
Unless you're planning on installing the countertops yourself, make sure to ask the dealer if they know a reputable countertop installer they can recommend. Also inquire as to what types of deposits or down payments are required; you should never pay the total amount - until the installation is completed.
