Spray foam insulation kits are inexpensive and can quickly and easily enhance existing insulation.
Step 1 – Get Square Footage
Measure the area where you want to apply the spray foam insulation. Measure width and length, and multiply these numbers together to get the square foot area.
Step 2 – Decide on Thickness
You do not need to fill the entire area with the spray foam insulation, and many people find this is far too expensive to do anyway. Instead, plan on spraying a layer of the foam over the area in a consistent thickness and then filling the rest of the space with another type of insulation, like fiberglass or cellulose.
Step 3 – Calculate Board Feet
Multiply the square footage by your desired depth of thickness in inches. This will give you the board feet measurement that you need for the spray foam.
Step 4 – Purchase Kits
Each kit covers a specific amount of board feet. The amount varies by the kit maker, but 600 board feet is average. Once you know the board feet measurement, then you will be able to determine how many kits you need by dividing your total by the size of the kit you are purchasing. While you can occasionally find kits at your local home improvement center or hardware store, it usually is found direct from manufactuers online or at speciality insulation retailers.
