How To Change Circular Saw Blades

To ensure smooth cuts, it is important to keep circular saw blades nice and sharp. This article will show you how to change your circular saw blades quickly and safely.

When to Change the Blade

Do you know when your blade is too dull? You can't tell just by looking at it, but rather by how it cuts.

Your blade shouldn’t offer any resistance while you’re cutting. When the blade dulls, it will take longer to cut through the material and the motor will have to work harder.

The first thing you may notice is that the motor makes a strange sound. While this doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem with the sharpness of the blade, that is likely the case. However, a funny noise could also mean you are not feeding the material at the right rate or that you are making a cut that is too deep.

How to Replace the Blade

When working with a power tool, you must first turn off the machine and unplug the cord from the electrical outlet. Make sure the cord is out of the way.

Lift the protective blade guard to expose the blade. Then place the saw on a sturdy surface and use bench clamps to hold it in place.

There is a hole that passes through the blade. Put a drill bit in the hole to keep the blade from moving or turning. Some newer saws come some sort of lock that is specifically designed to keep the blade from spinning.

Use a wrench or socket to loosen and remove the bolt that attaches the saw to the blade. Remove the blade and replace it with a new one. Then replace the bolt and make sure it is very tightly attached to the saw.

Different Types of Blades

There is more than one type of saw blade you can use.

  • Carbide-tipped blades are used for working with plywood or hardwood. This type of blade is extremely durable and lasts much longer than other blades.
  • Combination blades are the most common type. They are used for cross-cutting and mitering, and can be used with hardwood, softwood and plywood. This type of blade does not leave a smooth finish.
  • Abrasive cut-off blades are used for cutting tougher materials, like some stones, ceramic and metal. This blade must be matched to the material, and you need a saw that has an aluminum or magnesium guard.
  • Diamond blades have a diamond-bearing edges. This blade cuts the toughest types of materials, like marble, tile and stone.
  • Plywood blades are used for cutting wood.
  • Dado head blades actually have 2 different kinds of blades in one setup. This type is used on a table saw.

There are many more types of blades than this. Choose a blade based on the type of material you will be cutting.
