How to Clean a Fireplace Grate

Once the winter season is over, you may want to clean your fireplace grate in order to keep your living room looking clean and fresh. This is a fairly simple job, but a dirty one, so it takes a little bit of time to prep your fireplace in order to clean the grate.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Plastic sheet
  • Plastic trash bag
  • Fireplace shovel
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Wire brush
  • Rags
  • Bucket of water

Step 1: Remove Ashes

Cleaning the fireplace grate does no good if you leave the fireplace full of ashes. Remove the fireplace screen and place the plastic sheet on the floor in front of the fireplace. Using the shovel, carefully pick up the ashes and put them in a trash bag. Dispose of the ashes. Do a quick vacuum of the inside of the fireplace to pick up the rest of the loose ash. Once the majority of the ashes are removed, wipe down the inside of the fireplace with a wet rag to pick up as much of the remaining residue as you can.

Step 2: Cleaning the Fireplace Grate

Pull the fireplace grate out and place it on the plastic sheet to clean it. Scrub the grate with the wire brush to scrape off the soot. Wipe it down with a wet rag to finish.

Once that's done, you can either replace the fireplace grate immediately or give it a fresh coat of paint before putting it back.
