Aluminum gutters can easily get clogged with debris over the fall and winter and should be thoroughly cleaned out every spring. Keeping your gutters clean will ensure that they are working properly and that they are rainwater away from your house. Aluminum gutters are fairly easy to clean with just a few simple tools.
Step 1 - Set up the Ladder
Place your ladder securely in a position that allows you to easily access the gutter, starting at one corner and working your way around the house. Make sure to place the ladder so that you will be able to go up high enough to easily see into the gutters and to have your hands free.
Step 2 – Remove the Debris
Remove all of the loose debris from the gutter, such as leaves, twigs and needles. Put the debris into your bucket rather than just throwing it on the ground, that way you won’t have a mess in your yard to clean up later.
Step 3 – Rinse the Gutters
Using your garden hose, rinse out the gutters and downspouts. This will rinse away any dirt or obstructions that you couldn’t get out by hand. Run a steady stream of water through each downspout until you see a steady flow emerging at the bottom. If a downspout is clogged and can't be cleared with the hose, use a plumber's snake or a clothes hanger to clear the obstruction.
