Granite floor tiles have become a very popular decorating feature in many homes. Granite is a very hard stone, much harder than slate or limestone. However, it can still be scratched and damaged if not maintained properly. Black granite in particular can be difficult to care for.

Step 1-Preparation

Sweep the entire floor with a soft broom. Don't use a vacuum cleaner as the brushes can scratch the black granite. Black granite shows scratches more easily than other types of granite, so extra care should be taken with its cleaning. You can, however, use the dusting brush attachment on your vacuum to clean corners and around baseboards.

Step 2-Mopping

Fill the bucket about half full of warm water and add a few drops of mild liquid cleaner. Do not use any cleaner that contains an acid such as vinegar or lemon juice. Do not use cleaners that contain ammonia or chlorine. Do not use scouring powder or steel wool or a stiff scrub brush. Commercial cleaners are available at any retailer that sells granite that are safe for the floor if you have a problem finding something you like to use.

Dip the mop into the mixture and mop as you would with any other floor. Change the water as needed. When the mopping is finished, dry with a dry mop with a soft pad to prevent streaking.
