How to Clean Cool Mist Humidifiers

What You'll Need
White distilled vinegar
Standard dish soap
Clean wash towel

Designed to ease nasal congestion as well as relieve allergy or asthma symptoms, a cool mist humidifier comes in whole-house and portable varieties. In order to maintain optimal freshness, it's a good idea to regularly clean the unit. Otherwise bacteria could start to grow and negate any of the appliance's positive effects.

Step 1: Remove and Clean Water Basin

Turn off and unplug the humidifier. Each will be slightly different, but remove the water basin from the unit, empty it and wash it thoroughly with soap and warm water. Rinse and dry the basin.

Step 2: Run Vinegar Through the Mister

Pour a measure of distilled white vinegar into the basin and set it in place in the humidifier. Plug it in and activate the mister. Allow it to mist vinegar for a couple of minutes.

Step 3: Disassemble and Clean

Turn off and unplug the unit again. Remove the basin a second time and thoroughly clean and rinse it to remove all vinegar residue. Fill the basin with water and replace in the humidifier.

Step 4: Run Water Through the Mister

Activate the mister once again, letting the fresh water move through the mister to remove any remaining vinegar. Pour water out and fill the basin with fresh water for the next use.
