How to Clean the Filter in a Dishwasher

Regularly cleaning your dishwasher filter is the only way to keep your dishes sparkling after every cycle.

A dishwasher filter is an important part of the inner working of a dishwasher. It is responsible for trapping dirt, food, and other particles that are left behind from cleanings.

In order to keep your dishwasher filter from being overexposed with food and dirt, a thorough cleaning should be performed at least once a month.

Step 1 - Empty the Dishwasher

Start out with an empty dishwasher. Remove the bottom rack and locate the filter. The filter is usually on the floor of the dishwasher.

Step 2 - Locate and Remove Debris

Once the filter has been located, take a damp cloth and clean around the area. Be sure to remove all the debris. If you have a dishwasher that has a closed filter, unscrew the filter and remove the debris located inside.

Step 3 - Sanitize

After you have cleaned the filter, mix together ½ cup of baking soda, ½ cup of salt and one cup of bleach. Pour this mixture into the bottom of the dishwasher and allow it to sit overnight.

In the morning set your dishwasher to run a normal wash without any dishes in it to complete the cleaning process.
