One of the best ways to clear a clogged toilet is with a closet auger. A closet auger is a drain-clearing tool with a long sleeve and hook enabling you to clear out a clog.

Step 1 - Retract the Cable

Before using the closet auger, you want to make sure you set up the device properly. First you will retract the cable through the handle. Always make sure the tip of the cable lies at the end of the tip.

Step 2 - Insert the Guide

You want to make sure the auger is facing in the direction of the drain. Insert the auger facing the drain.

Step 3 - Crank Time

Once the auger is in the toilet you will crank it clockwise until you cannot crank anymore. Next you will crank the auger counterclockwise. Repeat cranking in both directions until the auger is as far as it will go into the drain.

Step 4 - Remove the Guide Tube

Remove the guide tube with care from the toilet bowl. If removal poses a problem, crank the auger to loosen it.

Step 5 - Use the Plunger

Once the clog is broken up, take a plunger to force the clog down the drain.

Step 6 - Flush the Toilet

Once the clog is no longer in view, it will be safe to flush the toilet.
