How to Convert Your Car to Run on Bio Diesel

Biodiesel fuel choice

With the high cost of gasoline and diesel it is no wonder that bio diesel and other alternative fuel sources are now becoming more accessible. Bio diesel is the best fuel alternative because many diesel engines on the market can run with a mixture of bio diesel and diesel. In order for your vehicle to run purely on bio diesel you'll need to convert your current engine. This article will give you the tools to understand how.

Get a Diesel Engine

In order to convert a car to bio diesel it has to be a diesel engine to start with. You cannot convert a gasoline powered car in to a diesel. If you have a regular gasoline car right now you can try to trade it in for a model of car that can better suit the needs of a bio diesel upgrade. Cars companies that make diesel cars that have had great success in this upgrade include:

  • Mercedes
  • Dodge
  • Ford
  • Toyota
  • Chevy
  • Volvo

Diesel Engine Modifications

The great thing about bio diesel fuel is that most diesel engines do not need to have any modifications done to it. There are, however, modification kits available that you can purchase and install yourself. If you are not comfortable with that type of work then by all means take it to your mechanic. The only upgrade you may have to think about it a gas tank warmer. If you live in an area that gets cold then a bio diesel engine may have problems as the fuel can thicken and cause problems. A gas tank warmer will prevent this from happening.

Where to Get Bio Diesel Fuel

Obtaining bio diesel is pretty easy and is actually usually either cheap or free. One of the most widely available bio fuels is used vegetable oil. You can make great use out of oil that you use in a home or commercial deep fryer. All you have to do is filter it. Most restaurants and nearly every fast food chain produces gallons upon gallons of fryer grease a week. This is grease that they have to pay someone to come and properly dispose of. You can help them out by taking it off their hands for free. With that said, you can produce your own bio diesel by getting a deep fryer and making French fries or other fried foods.

Filtering the Bio Diesel

In order to use fryer grease as bio diesel you have to filter it. There are many filters on the market but they can cost a lot of money. You can create your own filter out of several layers of cheese cloth over a bucket. You simply pour the used oil in to the bucket. You may have to strain it a few times before all of the debris is removed.

Using the Bio Diesel

If you have installed a conversion kit then you fill the auxiliary tank that came with the kit with the bio diesel. If, however, you are keeping your car as is then create a 50/50 mixture of regular diesel to bio diesel.
