How to Cut Metal Studs

What You'll Need
Measuring tape
Permanent marker
Tin snips
Carpenter's square

In building a new wall in your home or basement, and in using metal studs for those walls, you'll need to know how to cut those studs. Here's what you'll need to do:

Step 1 – Choose the Right Tin Snips

Unless you've cut metal wall stud before, you will unlikely have a pair of the right tin snips handy. If you do have a pair of tin snips, test them on a piece of scrap metal stud material to be sure they cut efficiently. If they don't, buy a new pair at a local hardware store or building supply. You new snips should be able to cut 20 gauge steel.

Step 2 – Measure and Mark Your Stud

Use your measuring tape to measure the length of the stud you'll be cutting, then use a permanent marker and mark the spot on the stud where you'll make the cut. Use your carpenters square and the marker to draw a cut line across the surface of the stud.

Step 3 – Cut Your Stud

With the tips of your snips on the cut line you marked, cut carefully along the line until you've cut through the wide surface and the 2 side surfaces.
