How to Diagnose a Faulty Hot Surface Ignitor
If your hot surface ignitor does not ignite or glow when you turn it on, you need to diagnose the cause of the problem before you take the ignitor apart or simply replace it with a new one. To diagnose the problem in your hot surface ignitor, here is what you should do.
Step 1 – Check the Power Source
If your ignitor has no power, you need to manually check the power source of your hot surface ignitor. You may use a voltage tester to determine if your ignitor is getting enough power. If the power on the ignitor fluctuates, check for loose connections at the power source. Fix any loose connections at the power source, then try to turn the ignitor on. If the ignitor glows after you fixed the loose connections, then you have found the problem.
Step 2- Check for Cracks
Damages and cracks on the ignitor can interfere with its functions and cause it to fail. To determine if the ignitor has damages and cracks, do a manual check on the unit and note the signs of wear and tear. You may also perform a resistance test on the ignitor to see if it is working up to capacity.
