How to Drain a Gunite Swimming Pool
A gunite swimming pool should not be left empty for very long. This pool is permanent and has cement sides built directly into the ground. This swimming pool is mostly drained for repairs. The pool itself will have a drain and filter that will partially drain the pool. However, in order to get rid of all of the water, a pump is needed.
Step 1 - Local Regulations
Be sure to check about any draining regulations in your area. These regulations can change depending on the season and region. Check before draining the pool so you do not acquire any fines for improper draining.
Step 2 - Pool Drain
Open the drain valve that is already installed in the pool. This valve is found in the system box that also contains the filter. There is a backwash needed to get rid of sediment in the drain tanks. Turn on the drain and then empty the pool until about 1/4th of the water is removed.
Step 3 - Release Valve
The gunite pool should have a hydrostatic release valve. This is needed in areas that have a high water table. Take this out of the main drain and throw it away. Once all the repairs are done the valve can be replaced. If the valve is not open, then there is a chance the pool can float from the ground. If there are no hydrostatic plugs then only leave the pool empty for as short a time as possible.
Step 4 - Submersible Pump
A submersible pump is needed to empty the rest of the water out of the pool. Insert the pump into the water. Make sure that the drain hose is away from the pool and the water will be funneled towards a sewer drain and not back into the pool. Turn on the pump and make sure that the water is draining.
Step 5 - Fast Draining
If you need to drain the pool as fast as possible, then a trash pump is the best. These pumps can be rented for a day. The trash pump can remove large volumes of water in a very short time as they will use above suction.
Step 6 - Winter Pump
A swimming pool cover pump can also be used to drain the pool. This pump is smaller than a trash pump so it will take longer to drain the pool completely. If you have one on hand and can take the extra time to drain the pool this is a very good option. Normally, these pumps are used to drain the pool for the winter.
Step 7 - Local Regulations

Step 8 - Water
Be careful where the draining water goes. If the water should collect by the pool, this can change the pressure in the ground near the pool and cause cracks and other damage. Ensure that the water is running off far from the pool and not be absorbed into the ground near the pool.
