Metal Drill Bits

To create a hole in a piece of metal to you need to drill metal with the right equipment. As metal can be toughened and various thicknesses it is vital that you use metal drill bits which will correctly penetrate the marked area and create a needed drill hole. These rules apply to piping as well as sheet metal.

Step 1 - Marking

Most projects require the same type of preparation before beginning the work involved and measuring and marking is generally required. Measure the area where you want to place your drilled hole and mark with a pencil.

Step 2 - Center Point

Some metals are thicker than others and you may need to get yourself started by using a center punch to create a dent where the drill bit will pierce the metal. This will prevent the bit from sliding around the metal. Place the center punch on the pencil mark and hammer it firmly to create the dent.

Step 3 - Drilling

Secure the metal drill bit into the drill and place it inside the dented area. Most metal drill bits have little sharp points which are designed to tear into the metal as the drill starts up. Hold the drill firmly and drill through the metal.
