If your ironing board has become broken, a quick inspection will usually disclose that the problem is with the components that keeps the board from folding up. You can often save the cost of a replacement if you repair this mechanism. Follow these simple instructions to successfully fix your ironing board.

Step 1 – Inspecting the Rod and Catch Plate

The folding mechanism consists of a metal rod, a catch plate, and a spring. This mechanism keeps the ironing board from collapsing. If one of these components is broken or damaged, the ironing board will likely fail to remain upright. Check these three components to see which one to replace or repair.

Step 2 – Repairing a Bent Rod

A bent rod will not slide through the catch plate. Locate the bend in the rod which is small enough (3/16-inch) that you should be able to straighten it. If you are unable to straighten it, buy a replacement rod at a home improvement store. If necessary, use a hacksaw to cut it to fit.

Step 3 – Replacing the Spring

If the spring that holds the rod in place is broken or damaged, you will not be able to repair it. Instead, take the spring with you to a hardware store or home improvement store and purchase a new one.
