When installing your sliding glass door there are some things that you will need to keep in mind. The frame is one of the most important things that you will have to work on whenever it comes to installation. You will need to be sure that you frame your door correctly to make sure that it is going to stay put and do its job for a long time to come.
Step 1: Types of Door Requirements
If you happen to have a pre-hung door then you will need to be sure that you have the manufacturer’s guide nearby. This guide will be able to provide you with detailed instructions on everything that you will need to do to properly install your door frame. However, if you happen to have a nonexistent opening where you plan on installing your new door, you will need a permit to do this. A sketch plan and calculations for the upper floor loads will need to be provided to the permit office. Replacement for existing doors will need to be square and plumb.
Step 2: Prepare
You will need to determine that the area is square and plumb. Then use a framing square to check all four corners of your door. If you run into any problems, a 4-foot carpenter’s level will be able to check the sides to see if they are level and plumb. You will need to carefully measure the area and make sure that the openings are at least 1/4 inch larger along the sides and the top. You will also need to inspect the area to make sure there is no type of rot. Check the stud’s sturdiness, if needed another a second stud.
Step 3: Caulk
Caulking is the most important part of this task. You will need to be sure that you place your frame right in front of the opening. Remember that too much caulk is much better than not enough.
Step 4: Position
This is where an assistant will come in handy. You will need to get your frame installed into the openings without disturbing the caulk that was just applied. You will need to get the top of the frame and lean the top of it away from the house. You will need to lower your frame on the decking. Try to do this without pushing the bottom of the plate towards your home.
Step 5: Nail Installation
You will need to begin nail installation in the nailing flange. Begin on the top right hand side of your frame. With a level, be sure to stay aware of the square and plumb of the frame. Continue the nail installation with the lower left hand side of your frame. Check for plumb and level on that side as well. From there you can finish up by nailing the flange all around the door. Be sure to continue to check the frame for square and plumb.
