It can be an embarrassing situation when our clothes stick to us due to friction. Unfortunately, it's a fairly common occurrence with shirts, dresses, and skirts, and especially garments worn with leggings or nylons and especially in the drier winter air. It's even worse when this happens at work, as it causes your crisp, professional attire to lay in an untidy manner. However, there are several ways to get rid of static cling. Keep these tips in mind if you find yourself in this awkward position.
Apply Hand Lotion
Find a private spot, such as a bathroom, where no one can see you because you will need to lift the part of your clothing that is sticking to you. Generously apply hand lotion at the spot on your body where the fabric is sticking. Allow it to absorb for a few minutes and then put your garments back on. Although there may still be static friction in your clothing, it will find no hold on your skin.
This method can also help with static cling between skirts and dresses and tights or nylons. Simply rub the lotion on top of the fabric, in the areas where your clothing is sticking.
You can also use hairspray to tackle static cling at work. In a private spot, lift your garment where it's clinging and spray the fabric on the underside. Allow it to dry several minutes before you let your clothes fall back normally, without the static cling.
Static Removal Spray
If you find that persistent static cling is a problem at work, spend a little cash on a can of static cling spray, a product specifically designed to eliminate cling. It's inexpensive, easy to use, and the can is small enough to keep in your desk drawer for frequent use.
Change Your Shoes
Although this can be an easier solution for men than women, changing your shoes from rubber-soled to leather can cut back on static cling.
You can also try rubbing the part of your body where the fabric clings to it against a wall. This is called static shock and is also a method used to eliminate static cling. The static cling is discharged to the wall and the clothes are free. This isn't a permanent solution, but it can do in a pinch so long as you're discreet.
