It’s easier to glue a glass chip if you have the chipped-out piece available. The best glue to use for glass chips is a two part epoxy resin. This type of resin is durable, water proof, and clear when dry. If you need to repair a chip in the rim of a glass, it is safer to smooth the edges down with a silicon carbine cloth. Follow this advice when gluing a glass chip on your own.
Step 1 - Prepare the Surface
Wash the glass with detergent and dry it thoroughly. Use gloves to protect against sharp edges.
Step 2 - Use Epoxy Resin for Glass Chips
Mix the two parts together according to the instructions on the epoxy glue packet. Use a toothpick for small areas to reduce the spread of excess glue. Always clean excess glue immediately, as it dries rapidly and is hard to remove. Use a clean toothpick to position each piece of glass when gluing glass and glass chips together. Apply pressure for 60 seconds to aid in bonding. Epoxy fully cures within 12 to 24 hours.
Step 3 - Use Silicon Carbide Cloth for Glass Chips
For chips on the rim of a glass, smooth sandpaper or silicon carbide cloth is recommended to use for filing down the chip, rather than repairing it with glue. The end result won't be perfect, but you'll be able to use the glass after the chip has been smoothed. A silicon carbine cloth can also be used to finish a glued glass chip repair.
