How to Grow Plants in Grapefruit Peels

Getting plants to grow from seedling to sprout can be one of the hardest parts of a gardener’s job. Did you know that you can grow a plant using a grapefruit rind? Let’s take a look at the advantages of planting plants this way and the steps you need to take to do it.

Advantages of Growing Plants in Grapefruit Peels

Outdoor conditions can be unpredictable and hazardous for a new seedling, and so it is easier for a gardener to plant seeds in a biodegradable pot and then transfer the plant outside once it sprouts and becomes too big for its pot.

Grapefruits can make inexpensive biodegradable pots—especially if you eat lots of citrus fruits! They also have a further advantage over other biodegradable pots you would find in a plant store. When they break down, your grapefruit peels provide important nutrients to feed your plants as they grow.

Growing Plants in Grapefruit Peels

Now that we’ve seen the advantage of growing plants in grapefruits peels, let’s take a look at how to do it.

Step 1: Prepare a Grapefruit

Cut your grapefruit into equal size halves. Scoop out the fruit inside, leaving only the rind. This leaves you with two pots you can use. Using a small knife, cut a tiny hole in the bottom that will allow water to flow through, but still be able to hold potting soil.

Step 2: Plant a Seed

Fill your new grapefruit peel pot about halfway with potting soil. Plant one or more seeds and make sure to add water. Store your grapefruit peel pot somewhere cool with lots of sunlight.

Step 3: Care for Your Plant

Water your plant regularly. With any luck, your plant will grow healthy and strong.

Step 4: Plant Outdoors

When your plant has grown so large that the rind will no longer support it, it’s time to plant it outside. Dig a small hole in the ground where you want to plant it and gently place the rind inside. Fill the hole with dirt until the rind is completely covered and the base of the plant is supported. Continue to water as needed.

Any citrus fruit can be used this way; however grapefruits are the largest in the family, so they make much better pots.

Using this method of growing plants can help you with the crucial time in their lifecycle where they grow from seedling to sprout.
