An unsightly outbreak of mold will require carpet mold cleaning to be undertaken to get rid of the odor that can result, and eliminate the health risks associated with mold. Following some steps to ensure the process is done correctly will prevent a further outbreak.
Step 1 - Prepare
Even if you have only noticed one spot that requires cleaning, there may well be others so it is worthwhile to make a full inspection. To give yourself a sufficient amount of space to work in, remove any items that are not fixed in place. Gather all the tools and equipment needed to complete the task.
Step 2 - Dry Carpet
If carpet mold cleaning is needed because your carpet has been saturated with water, this will need to be removed before the procedure can begin in earnest. Start by using a wet vacuum to suck up the majority of the water. Though this piece of equipment can be obtained from a tool hire company, there is an alternative if one is not available. Use a clean white towel and spread it over the carpet before gently treading across it to blot up the majority of the water. Be aware that using a colored towel may result in the dye transferring to the carpet so this should be avoided.
Step 3 - Clean Carpet
When most of the water has been removed or if the carpet was dry in the first place, the cleaning can begin. Thoroughly dissolve some laundry detergent in a bucket of tepid water in accordance with the instructions before sprinkling a small amount of laundry detergent directly over the carpet. This will act as an abrasive during the cleaning process. Soak a cloth in the bucket of cleaning solution and wring it out before using it to rub the surface as carpet mold cleaning. At this stage, reduce the risk of transferring mold spores that might be present with the use of protective wear. Rinse the cloth regularly and avoid getting the carpet too wet in the process of cleaning it. If necessary, use the wet vacuum again to rinse the carpet and remove the excess water. Alternatively, use a clean cloth dampened with clean water to rub over the surface of the carpet that you have washed. Spread a dry towel over the surface to soak up the water from the carpet.
Step 4 - Prevention
Finish off the carpet mold cleaning process by carefully mixing a solution of 1 cup of water to ¼ cup of ammonia in an empty spray bottle. After thoroughly combining it, spray a small amount of the solution evenly over the carpet. Avoid saturating the carpet by working in straight lines and allowing one trigger spray for each line without overlapping. If possible, leave the windows or doors of the car open to allow the carpet to dry.
