A bathtub liner can provide a new look for your old bathtub surface. You can get standard liners at the home improvement store and install them with ease. This type of liner will be installed directly over the top of your existing bathtub and will basically cover up the existing tub. Follow the simple steps below to effectively install a bathtub liner.
Step 1 - Prepare the Bathtub
Remove anything that is on the surface of the bathtub so that the liner will stick well. To do so, pour denatured alcohol onto the surface of the tub. Use your rag to scrub the surface with the alcohol. It will remove soap scum and oil.
Step 2 - Remove the Knobs
To get the bathtub liner in place, remove the knobs from the fixtures in the bathtub. Unscrew them and set them aside so that you can replace them later. Some people take this opportunity to replace the faucet. If that is the case, take it off and add a new faucet later.
Step 3 - Apply Adhesive
Apply the adhesive to the old bathtub. Spread it evenly over the surface of the old bathtub. Ensure that every bit of it is covered so that you do not have any gaps in coverage when the new liner is installed.
Step 4 - Apply Sealer
You also need to install a sealer. It is a substance that will go around the outside edge of the liner to prevent moisture or anything else from getting under it.
Step 5 - Put the Liner in Place
The liner will be a large, single piece of acrylic or PVC. Place it on the bathtub and cut it to fit with a utility knife. Once the liner is in place, press it down to the bathtub surface so that all of the air is removed. You may have to place heavy objects onto the liner to make sure it sticks, or use a tool (such as a rubber mallet) with a towel on the end to push along the liner and expel the air.
Step 6 - Caulk
Apply a thin bead of caulk around the edge of the bathtub. Doing so will keep moisture out and create a finished look.
Allow the bathtub liner to dry. In most cases, you should allow it to dry for at least 24 hours before using the bathtub again.
