Whether a new door is installed or the old broken latch of an existing door is replaced, installing a door latch is a common task which can be achieved at home. You do not require a carpenter to do this task for you. All you need is a little carpentry skills and the tools required to perform this task. The steps to install a door latch set is given below.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Latch kit with strike plate
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Helper
  • Pencil
  • Drilling machine

Step 1 - Removing the Old Latch Set

Remove the broken latch set from the door. Use the Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the two screws on the inside latch handle. The screws secure the door to the two latch handles. Remove the handles from the door and remove the screws that hold the door jamb and the old strike plate together.

Step 2 - Drilling Holes for the New Latch Set

For a new door, the size of the door hole is measured. Depending on the measurement of the door holes, drill two holes which are used to attach the latches are drilled. This process can be done with the help of a drilling machine. The new latch set parts contain the 2 sleeves, 2 knobs, screws and a latch assembly. The sleeve and knob pairs are very identical. To assemble the latch set and secure it to a door, only 3 screws are required.

Step 3 - Seeking a Helping hand

Place the outer handle of the new latch set into the three door holes on the door. You may need a help of a person to hold the door handle while you complete the installation from inside the door.

Step 4 - Inserting the Screws

Position the inside handle over the center spindle of the outside handle so that it protrudes through the door. Insert the two screws into the holes from inside the handle and into the threaded sleeves of the outside handle, inside the door. Use the screwdriver to tighten the screws.

Step 5 - Placing the Strike Plate

Using the latch mechanism, close the door and line up the new strike plate. The strike plate is kept on the door jamb in such a way that the door latch is secured properly around the plate. Using a pencil, mark the mounting holes for the strike plate onto the jamb of the door.

Step 6 - Testing

Keep the door open to give you room to attach the strike plate. Place the strike plate is over the pencil mark made in the previous step. Now fix the strike plate to the door jamb using wood screws. Your door latch set is successfully installed.

Tips and Warnings

Do not over-tighten the screws, as it damages the wood and gives a sloppy look.
