A dryer vent duct is an essential component of a dryer for several reasons. A vent will ensure that all the lint from clothes is safely released into the open air along with the potentially harmful gases from the hot air of the dryer. If not properly vented, these gases and the lint can lead to severe respiratory problems. In addition, a well-vented dryer will dry the clothes much quicker than a non-vented one. Keep the following steps in mind when installing a dryer vent duct.

    Step 1: Measure the Plan

Considering the location of your dryer, you should estimate the potential route of your duct path. When planning the duct-path, you should try your best to make the path as direct as possible. The fewer bends your pipe will run through, the less the labor involved and the chances of a leak. After careful measurements and evaluations, you should get the required material. If you think there is no other way but to route the pipe through the ceiling, then you must use insulated pipes to avoid leakage in extreme temperatures. When choosing the type of ducts, it is often recommended to choose metal ones over plastic ones due to higher durability.

Step 2: Install the Vent Cap (External Unit)

To estimate the exact external location of the duct pipe, drill a test hole through the wall and check the position of the hole from the outside. In case of any deviations, adjust the hole so that it coincides with the top of the vent cap. After ensuring the right location of the hole, use a hole saw to expand it into a 4-1/2 inch gap. On completion, install the vent cap and seal it using a caulk gun.

Step 3: Install the Duct Pipe (Internal Unit)

Trim the duct pipe to the size of the measurements taken earlier and attach elbows at ends (and bends) using foil tape. After ensuring that the pipe fits the measurements, install the respective elbows into the pipe leading into the dryer and the one leading to the outdoor unit. Make sure the pipe runs along a wall to ensure stability. You can strap the pipe to a wall to ensure that there are no disruptions in the setup over time. When installing the pipe, it is better to proceed sequentially from one end to another. During installation, take necessary precautions by wearing protective gloves since sharp metal edges can easily cut through your skin.

Step 4: Run the Dryer and Check

After the duct pipe has been installed properly, you should run the dryer and then check the functionality of the vent flap outside. If the flap is opening, then your dryer is ready for usage. Maintenance of the vent is also necessary to ensure proper functionality over time. Lint from the dryer can clog the vent cap. Therefore, you should systematically clean it for best results.
