Tools and Materials

  • Duct fan booster
  • Duct tape
  • Metal screws
  • Drill
  • Duct ties
  • Duct hangers
  • Razor knife
  • Wire cutters
  • Measuring tape

Step 1 – Preparation

There are some things you need to know before purchasing a duct fan booster. Know the size of your duct work. Boosters are made for different duct sizes. Inspect your ducts for tears that can leak out air. Also, check to see if the model of booster you are purchasing has an electrical cord to be plugged in. This will help you determine where you install it. Always turn off the power when working with electricity.

Step 2 – Where to Install

Place your duct fan booster in the direction of the room register. Measure 6 inches from your main duct line and multiply by 5, which would mean you install the unit at least 30 inches away from the main duct line.

Step 3 – Remove Section of Duct

Remove the section of duct you are placing the duct fan booster in. Use the wire cutters, the drill to remove screws (if any), and the razor knife to cut out the duct. Being able to work on the duct on a workbench or table will help you. Install the duct fan booster according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The fan will be mounted inside the duct with screws. Models will have an arrow showing the air flow direction. Make sure you install the booster in the direction the air will be flowing.

Step 4 – Replace the Duct

Put the duct back in place. If your model requires being plugged in, plug in the cord and seal the area around it with duct tape. Secure with metal screws or duct tape, depending on the type of duct you have. Be careful not to tear the duct and seal all edges with a good amount of duct tape. Make sure to hang the duct as level as possible using the duct hangers.

Step 5 – Turn on Unit

It's time to turn on the unit. Check for air leaks when the unit is running and then enjoy the improved air flow provided by your new duct fan booster.
