A garage door opener keypad allows you to use your garage door without having to worry about a remote. Installed on the wall near the door, the keypad is used by inputting a code which opens and shuts the door. A keypad can be easily installed with a few instructions.
Step 1 – Location
Select a location for your keypad. With attached garages the keypad is typically placed near the door that connects the house and garage. Choose a location that will work best for you.
Step 2 – Power
Once you have the location picked out, you are going to need to turn the power off to your garage door opener. You can do this through your breaker box. Make sure that the power is completely off before starting the next step. Failure to do so could result in electrical shock.
Step 3 – Drill
Once you are sure that the power has been turned off, drill a hole in the wall where you plan to install your keypad. This will be your pilot hole that will go from the outside into the inside of your garage. The hole needs to be about ½ inch in size. Use an electric drill for this task as it is easiest.
Step 4 – Cable
Once your hole has been drilled, you will need to run the cable that is attached to your keypad into the hole that goes through the inside of your garage. Use your screwdriver and the screws that went along with it so that you can get the keypad properly mounted on the outside of your garage.
Step 5 – Connect Box
You are now ready to get the control box connected to your keypad. This requires screwing the wire into the terminal opening. It is a good idea to use a low voltage wire for this task. Depending on the model garage door keypad that you have, you may need 2 voltage wires. You are now ready to get your control box snapped back into place on the keypad. Make sure that you find a spot inside of your garage where you can mount the control box with screws that were included.
Step 6 – Finish Up
Put the batteries into the keypad control box. Once the batteries are in, turn the power to your garage door opener back on. You are now ready to program your code into the keypad.
