How to Install a Grass Paver Driveway

A new type of material for building a driveway, or a walkway, is the grass paver. This type of paver is very permeable and great for irrigation. This type of paver is manufactured as a hollow paver that interlocks with others to form a solid base. They are hollow to allow for grass to grow through them. If you are thinking about installing a grass paver driveway for your home, here are some of the steps to take. This is an easy project to do, but will require some time and labor.

Step 1 - Prepare Ground for Grass Paver

One of the most important steps in installing a grass paver driveway is the slope of the ground. You will need to spend a little bit of time on the grade of your driveway. If it is too flat, the water will not drain properly. You will be left with a very soft, muddy driveway. Make sure there is a slight incline to the driveway for the pavers to be efficient.

Step 2 - Create Outline of Driveway

If the driveway is already there you can use the existing outline. However, if this is new construction, or you are putting a new driveway in an area where there wasn't one, you will need to define the outline. Use some paint and spray the ground along where the driveway will go.

Step 3 - Remove Sod Install Drainage

If this is a new installation, you will need to remove the sod that is currently there. A sod cutter will make very quick work of this. If the driveway area is already clear, you will need to install a few drainage pipes to carry away any groundwater. These pipes should be a few inches below the surface and running with the grade.

Step 4 - Spread out Crushed Rock

The base of the grass paver driveway is going to be crushed rock. Spread it out over the surface of the driveway and rake it to a depth of 2 inches. Use a compactor to pack the crushed rock for a solid foundation.

Step 5 - Install Grass Pavers

Start at the bottom of the driveway and start installing the grass pavers. Begin in the center and work your way to either end. You'll find that laying the pavers is very easy once you see how they lock together. However, cutting them to fit requires the use of a power saw. Lay down the entire paver as it is. Do not do any cutting before you lay down the grass paver until you finish the driveway.

Step 6 - Spread Out Top Soil

Once the pavers are installed, spread topsoil over the top of it. Use a rake and smooth it out so the topsoil rests within the hollow of the paver.

Step 7 - Cut Pavers

Use a chalk line and mark the end of the pavers along the length of the driveway. Run the power saw along the chalk line to cut the pavers to size.

Step 8 - Plan Grass Seed

With the pavers installed you will now spread out the grass seed. Water the area and keep it watered until the grass sprouts.
