How to Install a Media Room Projector Screen

Installing a projector screen in your home can provide the perfect spot for things like family movie night, watching the big game, or streaming your new favorite show. You can have a functional screen in your home in just a few simple steps.

Step 1 - Choose a Location

First, pick a place for your projector screen. You’ll want a spot that features comfortable sitting areas for easy viewing. Avoid choosing a space directly in front of a window that receives abundant sunlight, as extended exposure to sun can damage the screen.

An easily darkened room like a basement is the best option, as the picture on projectors looks best when used in a dark setting.

Step 2 - Decide How to Mount the Projector

There are two main types of projector mounts—ceiling and wall—so decide which works best for you. The ceiling might seem like more work, but it ultimately avoids more obstructions, and it interferes less with any design elements you may already have on your wall.

If neither ceiling nor wall seems appropriate in your space, a simple shelf can sometimes do the trick!

Step 3 - Construct a Template

Since the screen will end up being quite heavy once it’s ready to be mounted, it’s wise to create a cardboard template to make installation more precise. This will help you keep the holes for screws spaced evenly across the top.

Cut a square of cardboard in the shape of your chosen screen, then draw a line half an inch down from the top using a marker and a tape measure. Punch holes along the top line for two evenly spaced screws to go in. Then, with a pencil, use this template to trace the markings on the wall or ceiling where the projector will be installed on either side.

Step 4 - Pre-Drill the Holes

This step makes it easier to add in the real screws, and helps determine if there are any studs in the wall or ceiling that can assist in the installation. Using a 3/16 drill bit, bore through the drywall to make your holes where previously marked.

If you hit studs in this process, you can use these in mounting the projector, as they’re helpful in bearing the weight of something heavy. If no studs exist where you’re drilling holes, you can alternatively use anchor bolts to achieve the same goal.

Alternatively, you can use a stud finder or other method to pick the most secure place to mount your screen.

Step 5 - Raise and Install the Top of the Projector Screen

This step is best done with a partner, due to the weight of the screen, so enlist the help of someone else for this part of the process. Beneath each set of the pre-drilled holes, place step stools or ladders on each side. In one careful movement with your partner, lift the projector towards the spot where you're planning to mount it.

One end at a time, use a drill and screws to affix the projector to the wall or ceiling. Tighten the screws so they’re almost completely secure. Continuously alternate between sides that are being screwed into the wall, slowly tightening the screws until the mount is completely flush with the wall or ceiling to which it's adjacent.

Step 6 - Finishing Touches

The last step is to thread a string or rope (that should have come with the projector screen) onto the handle of the screen to make it easier to reach and pull down. Test out pulling down the screen and align it correctly.
