Angle brackets

Follow these easy steps to install a skylight, which will help you save on your utility expense and create a modern feel to your design.

Step 1 - Choose a Location for Your Skylight

First you must determine where the skylight should go. Plan according to the existing wiring and plumbing in your walls. Trace the outline on the ceiling. The best size is about 10% of the original ceiling.

Step 2 - Make the Opening in the Roof

Drill through the center of the area you have drawn and use a roof saw to make the hole you have drilled larger.

Step 3 - Fit in the Skylight

Frame the 2x4-inch boards using the brackets. Use screws to attach the frame to the hole for the window. You can trim the edges with a utility blade to make it just large enough for the window. Use a level to make certain that the window is applied properly.

Step 4 - Seal the Boundaries

Weatherproof the edges with sealant tape. Many manufacturer's kits include flashing with the window kit. The screws must be tight so that the flashing does not fail.

Step 5 - Check for Leakage

Pour a gallon of water over the newly installed skylight. Inspect the interior for signs of leaks. Tighten the flashing to repair leaks. Inspect the seal every so often.
