Installing a stainless steel chimney liner is relatively easy especially if you do not mind crawling inside tight places. To install your chimney liner at home, here is what you should do:

Step 1 – Prepare the Chimney Liner for Installation

To prepare the stainless steel chimney liner for installation, remove the liner from its packaging and lay it down on a flat surface. Fasten the bottom appliance connector and then attach and tighten the hose clamp to the liner. Make sure that the hose clamp is tight enough to hold the liner together.

Step 2 – Measure and Cut the Liner to Fit into the Chimney

With a measuring tape, measure the exact length of the liner needed for your chimney. Add 1 foot to the length needed to cover your chimney from bottom to the crown. After measuring the liner, get a heavy duty pair of tin snips and carefully cut the liner. For safety reasons, make sure that you do not leave jagged edges on your liner.

Step 3 – Insulating the Liner

The chimney liner should be insulated from top to bottom. To do this, get the insulating wrap and measure the amount needed to cover your liner then add an allowance of 1 inch for the overlap. After cutting your insulating wrap to fit your liner, you need to lay the insulation wrap on the ground with the foiled side facing the ground. Set the liner in the center of the insulation and then wrap the insulation around the liner. Leaving at least 1 inch overlap on the seam and then secure the overlap with the use of an adhesive tape. To secure the insulating wrap, spray adhesive into the liner then use your hand to pat the insulation wrap into place.

Step 4 – Protect the Insulation Wrap from Damage

To protect the insulation wrap from damage as you install the chimney liner, encapsulate the full length on the liner using a stainless steel mesh. To do this, put the insulated chimney liner in the center of the stainless steel mesh and then wrap the mesh around the liner. Use the hose clamps to hold the stainless steel mesh in place. Take care not to damage the insulating wrap as you tighten the hose clamps.

Step 5 – Installing the Liner

You may need a partner to help you install the chimney liner so make sure that you have the needed manpower ready before you start installing your liner. Remove the appliance connector to have room to feed liner through chimney. To install the liner, tie the rope around the liner, ask your partner to pull the rope from the top of the chimney while you guide the liner down the chimney. Once the chimney liner is in place, put silicon caulk around the crown of the chimney, then press the top of liner into it. Secure the bottom of the liner and then attach the bottom of the liner to the appliance connector.
