A T-hinge is a common type of hinge that is shaped like the letter “T.” These hinges are known for placing practicality over good looks. They are often used on barn doors, chest lids and hanging signs. Because they are not recessed like some other types of hinges, installing them is very easy and can be done by any one.
Step 1 – Drill Pilot Holes
Dry fit the hinge onto the objects to which it is going to be attached and mark where the screws are going to go. If the hinge is held upright so that it resembles the letter “T,” the shorter horizontal portion is the base and should be attached to the anchored non-moving part of the object. So, for example, if the hinge is being attached to a door, the horizontal part of the “T” shape should be attached to the frame and the longer vertical piece will connect to the door itself. Once the screw holes are marked, drill pilot holes to keep the material from splitting when the screws are installed.
Step 2 – Secure the Screws
Once the pilot holes have been drilled, thread screws through the holes provided on the hinge and screw them into the anchored or non-moving surface first. Use a screwdriver to tighten them down fully. Lastly, install the screws in the same manner on the swinging object the hinge will be manipulating (i.e. the door or lid).
