Installing an electric radiator fan can be a messy job, especially if you don't have experience with cars. Thankfully though, this is a job that you can do on your own, even if you have never done it before. Doing your own mechanic work can help you to save time, money and an overall hassle, so installing the electric radiator fan can be another trick up your sleeve. Here are a few tools and materials that you will need, along with some steps that can help to guide you through the process.

Step 1 - Gain Access

Before you start any part of the installation process, check the manual for the car. If you do not still have your copy that came with the car, then you can find one on line that will match your make, model and year. Use the manual to get familiar with what’s going on under the hood. This will help you to know what you are looking for and hopefully make the process go by smoothly, especially if you are new to mechanic work.

Begin by removing the radiator cowl which is typically held down by a clip or screws. You can use a socket wrench to get it out. Then, unscrew and remove the radiator fan. You can use a fan wrench to do this step. Use the socket wrench so that you can remove the fan shroud. When you are taking the fan out, you may want to take note of where the wires are connected and even draw a diagram for yourself so that you can see where the new wires will need to go.

Step 2 - Install the Fan

To install the fan, mount it and attach the wires that you removed from the fan. You may need to use zip ties to hold some of them in place. Refer to the diagram and manual so that you know exactly which wires need to be hooked up and where. Be sure that the wires are frayed or not properly attaching. Replace any frayed wiring so that it doesn’t cause a fire or a shortage. Make sure you use electrical tape to fix any wiring that needs to be attached more securely.

Step 3 - Close Up

Once you have installed the fan, you will need to put the fan shroud back into place as well as the radiator fan and the cowl that is holding it all together. Be sure to secure everything tightly and then check the car to make sure it is all working. If you run into any problems along the way, consult the manual or call a professional for assistance.
