When you switch on the ignition of your car you will see all the dashboard lights illuminate including the oil pressure switch (gauge light). When you start the engine, all of these lights should go off if you have no issues with your engine. However, if you do have a problem, you will notice the oil pressure switch light will come on.

You must stop your car as soon as you are able to and check the oil pressure. If there is no enough oil in the engine, the pressure will be reduced. If you check and find there is enough oil, it could be a signal that your oil pressure switch needs replacing.

Step 1 – Locating the Oil Pressure Switch on your Vehicle

You first need to locate the positioning of the oil pressure switch on your vehicle. This will vary from car to car so if you are not sure where it is placed on your particular model, check the manual for that car and locate it from the help section or troubleshooting section.

Step 2 - Disconnection of the Old Switch

The oil pressure switch is usually locked to an electrical connector and to remove this, you will need the flat head screw driver. Locate the small screw that tightens the connector on and loosen it prior to removal it. You may need to wiggle it a little to pry it off if the fitting is a little snug.

Step 3 – Drips and Drops

You might find you get a few little drips of oil coming off the pressure switch as you remove it so grab the cloth and hold it below the switch to catch any drips of oil that might escape. Be prepared for this just before removal

Step 4 – The Switch

Use the right sized socket with a ratchet and loosen the bolt that attaches the oil pressure switch to the body of the engine. Remove the bolt and the oil pressure switch will be released.

Step 5 – The New switch

When you install the brand new oil pressure switch, locate it first by hand and then tighten slowly into the thread to avoid any crossing. When it is securely situated, you can then tighten it with the right socket and ratchet pieces. You can then take the cloth away from where you had it held to catch any oil drips.

Step 6 – The Connector

Before you proceed to reattach the electrical connector just give it a quick wipe over to make sure the metal connectors are clean and grease free. Wiggle it back into place within the new oil pressure switch and re-tighten the small holding screw.

Step 7 – Oil

Check the level of the oil using the car dipstick. If your engine oil level is a little low, put some fresh oil in and reset the level to the right amount. Continue to check regularly to make sure no further problems are present.
