Bay window shutters are a popular way to attractively provide privacy to your home. They're mounted in the inside of the windows, remain down most times unlike blinds and can be opened and closed as needed. Often bay window shutters need to be to be custom designed to fit the unique dimensions of a bay window. Follow these steps to measure, order the right sized shutters for your windows and to install the custom ordered shutters yourself.
Step 1 - Decide the Type of Mount
Determine if you want to mount the shutters inside or outside of your windows. The typical bay window has three windows side-by-side. The middle one is in line with the line of the house with the other two on either side at slight angles. Sometimes the positioning of these window limits shutter installation options. Figure out what works best for your type of bay window keeping in mind that inside mounts always look streamlined and work well when there isn't much space between the windows but only work with recessed windows.
Step 2 - Determine the Frame Depth
Choose the frame depth you'd like for your shutters. the average bay window shutters come in three frame depths: regular frame, deep frame and extra-deep frame. Use regular frame for a louver depth of 1 3/8 inches or 2 1/2 inches. The deep will accommodate a louver depth of 3 1/2 inches and the extra-deep frame will work with a louver depth of 4 1/2 inches. Many shutter developers suggest going with the deeper frame if you're unsure of what you need. Larger frames can accommodate smaller louvers and a larger frame guarantees there will be enough room for the louvers to open and close without hitting anything on the window.
Step 3 - Measure the Window
Use the steel tape measure and measure the width of each window at the top, middle and bottom. Measure the width at the left, center and right. Usually the smallest of these dimensions is what you'll give the bay window shutter manufacturer but check with your manufacturer first before order the shutters. Most manufacturers will take care of the deductions for optimum fit.
Step 4 - Order the Shutters
Order the shutters based on your needs providing all information the manufacturer needs to cut the blinds for you. The blinds will be shipped to you ready to install.
Step 5 - Install the Shutters
Assemble frame according to manufacturer's instructions. Position the frame. Drill a long screw through the hole on the left and right hand side of the frame to hold it in place. Hang panels in the order they're labeled by the hinge pins. Raise or lower the panels as needed by loosening the hinge screws with a screwdriver and moving the panels. Tighten the hinge locking screw when satisfied with the panel position. Fill holes in the frame with filler in an outside mount and wood plugs in an inside mount.
