You could save money on energy bills by installing foam pipe insulation. Pipes that are not insulated tend to sweat. This will cause loss of heat, as well as erode the pipe prematurely. Foam pipe insulation can help protect the pipes, as well as conserve energy.

Another reason to insulate your pipes with foam pipe insulation is to help protect them from the cold. When a pipe gets too cold in the winter it can burst, creating many problems. The cost of a plumber to make the repairs for an emergency call is also detrimental.

For just a few dollars you can avoid the inconvenience and expense of a burst pipe by simply adding foam pipe insulation yourself. This tutorial will walk you through the installation steps needed to do a professional job.

Step 1 - Start with a Clean Pipe

Before you begin the foam insulation installation process, you need to clean off all of the dust and debris from the pipe. You can use any kind of cleaner that you may have in the kitchen. Use a rag and wipe it off thoroughly. Wait until it is dry to put the insulation on. Ensure that no dust particles are left.

Step 2 - Measure a Section of Pipe

Measure a section of pipe and cut the foam pipe insulation to the correct size. You can include any joints and elbows, as the insulation should slide right over them.

Step 3 - Install Foam Pipe

Most of the time the foam pipe insulation will come in a tube similar to a child’s swimming noodle with an open side. The open side should have a strong layer of self-stick adhesive on it. Take the piece of foam pipe insulation and press it into place around the pipe.

Once the whole pipe is covered peel the paper from the adhesive and press the ends of the insulation closed. If you have a bend in the pipe you will seal the insulation closed and slide it past the bend. Ensure that no portion of the pipe is uncovered, or else the process will have to be repeated.

Step 4 - Finish

Once the pipe is covered in the foam pipe insulation, use the duct tape to seal it. This is done so that the foam pipe doesn’t come out.
