Foam roofing, even though it is one of the most economical of roofing systems, is not one of your traditional roofing systems. It is often used by roofers and homeowners, alike, to replace portions of roofs that are missing or broken, and in situations where more standard roofing such as tile would not be applicable. But if you wish to install a section of roof that will be constructed almost exclusively from a foam base, you can also do that. But first, you will need the right materials and tools for the job, as well as instructions as to how to install such a roof. You will find this information below.

Step 1 – Preparing Your Roof

Preparation is an important step in installing a foam-based roof. First, clear the roof of all debris by sweeping it off with a garden broom. For debris pieces too large to be removed with a broom, such as broken or loose tiles, shingles, or slate pieces, gather them and remove them from the section of roof where you plan to install your foam. Lastly, you will need to remove remaining layers of dust and particles your broom was unable to pick up. Use a moistened sponge to remove this dust, then allow the surface to completely dry.

Step 2 – Applying Caulking

The type of foam you will use to cover your roof area usually comes in a liquid state and will need caulking to be laid down before you apply the foam. This caulking will act as an adhesive for the foam you will later apply. In addition, the caulking will seal gaps, cracks, or small holes you will want to cover with your foam. Although caulking is the least expensive base for your foam, you can substitute other materials such as plastic sheeting, plywood or pressed wood sheets. Just be sure, no matter what base you use, that the surface on which you will apply your foam is completely dry.

Step 3 – Applying the Foam

You will typically find that your foam material comes in large containers such as drums. To remove this material from its container you will need to pump it out with a powered pump or other removal mechanism that includes an applicator, or gun. These applicators mix together the materials that, when combined, create the foam you will apply to your roof. Typically, you will be able rent a suitable pump and application gun from the dealer who sold you the foam material.

Step 4 – Applying the Top Coating

After allowing the applied foam to set, you should then cover it with a protective coating such as acrylic. You can typically purchase a variety of coatings from a roofing supplier, a waterproofing supplier, even from a local home improvement center. Apply multiple coats of the coating to your foam with a large paint brush, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next coat. Be sure you carefully cover all foamed areas, including areas such as the edges of your roof.
