How to Install Garage Door Cables

What You'll Need
A garage door cable
A 3-inch wrench
2 grips
Safety glasses
Cable stripper

Installing garage door cables is not something difficult, it’s actually a task you can perform on your own, especially if you have some basic experience with wires and cables. Normally, the garage door operates all day long, opening and closing many times during the day. Broken and misaligned cables are a rather common problem when it comes to garage door cables, so you need to be able to replace them when necessary.

Step 1 – Preparation

The first thing you need to do is gather all the proper tools and materials you will need to install the cable and adjust the springs. Do not attempt to do so without having the necessary tools handy.

Step 2 – Wrap the Cables

Once you have everything you need, you should take the pulley–guide of the cables and wrap them around it. You should lay the cable over the pulley and have the end extending back to the arm of the cable to connect it to the garage ceiling or track. Make sure the garage door is closed before routing the cables, so that you can screw them and tighten them properly.

Step 3 – Attach the Cables

Attach the cables in the slots of the door bottom, these slots are usually made for the door cables. Do so, sliding the end of the cable into the slots, making sure that it rests properly at the track of the garage door. Keep in mind that if the cables do not rest on the tracks properly the entire installation will fail. Once the cables are in place, you should attach their other ends to the setting overhead. In order to do so, you should loosen the screws to the setting and install the cables inside it. When you place the cables, use the screwdriver to tighten the screws and place the necessary tension to each cable.

Extra Tip – Installation Troubleshooting

When you install the cables, you should check if the door opens properly. If not, there are a few things you should check. First of all, you should check if the cables are on the track, resting properly as mentioned before. If that is okay, you should also check if the applied tension is too high. That can also be a common problem. One of the things you need to keep in mind is that the cables should not be short. It’s better to have a longer cable rather than a shorter one, because this way you can fix potential problems and relieve tension when needed. If you receive a short cable with your garage door you can either contact the manufacturer and ask for a longer one, or go to a supply store and buy one on your own.
