How to Install Hinge Bolts for Added Door Security Part 2

What You'll Need
Hinge Bolts (6 per door)
Hinge Bolt Plate
Drill Bit
Sharp Utility Knife

This article is the second part of a two part article on installing hinge bolts to your doors to increase door security. In the first article we explained the process for installing the bolts by looking at the supplies and materials, and drilling the holes for the bolt's installation. Here we look at installing the bolts, securing the bolt plate and repeating the process for the installation of all hinge bolts and hinge bolt plates for the door.

Step 1: Chisel the Area for the Hinge Bolt Plate

In the first article we concluded with the drilling of holes through the individual markings for the hinge bolts. With the holes made it is time to chisel a recess in order to install the hinge bolt plates.

Place the chisel directly on the score lines made in the previous article with the utility knife. Strike the chisel handle with the hammer with enough force to cause the wood to peel back. Repeat this process until you have removed approximately 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch of wood (depending on the thickness of the plate), creating a recess for installing the hinge bolt plate.

Step 2: Place the Hinge Bolt Place into the Recess

Place the hinge bolt plate inside the recess, making sure that it is flush with the hinge. Line the hole in the hinge bolt plate with the hole previously drilled where the hinge bolt will be installed.

Step 3: Place the Hinge Bolt in the Plate

Take the hinge bolt and insert it inside the hinge bolt plate. Using a screwdriver, tighten the screw to secure the hinge bolt plate. You need to open and close the door several times to make sure that it moves freely and is not impeded in any way. If it is obstructed, you need to remove the hinge bolt plate and use the chisel to remove any excess wood that may be causing the plate to protrude outward.

Step 4: Repeat Process

With the first plate installed you need to repeat the process for the installation of additional hinge bolts and hinge bolt plates. One tip to make your life easier is to chisel out the recesses for all of the hinge bolt plates first for each of the doors that you are looking to install. Doing this once will make the task of inserting the hinge bolt plates and hinge bolts easier.

When chiseling the wood to create the recess for the hinge bolt plates, work carefully with the hammer and chisel. You want to strike the wood in a way that removes only the amount of wood needed to create the recess and allow the plate to lie flush with the hinge.

This concludes the process for the installation of hinge bolts for your door.
