How to Install Mini Blinds on Windows

Mini blinds are an excellent option to provide shade and privacy to your home but when open they provide a reasonably clear view of the outdoors. The range of sizes and colors means that you are likely to find one to fit your windows and decor. Mini blinds are also easy to install yourself, just follow the instructions below.

Step 1 - Measure and Choose Blinds

Before you buy your mini blinds, you need to decide whether you will hang them on the inside of the window frame or the outside. Measure the width and height of each window carefully, particularly if you want to mount the blinds on the inside of the window frame. Small variations are not unusual even if all of your windows look alike.

Step 2 - Check Contents

Remove all of the components from the packaging and make sure that you have the correct pieces. You should have a right and left bracket and will be unable to hang the blind without both of those and, for wider windows, a center bracket.

Step 3 - Install Brackets

Measure the width of your window then divide it by two to find the distance to the center of the window. Measure this distance and place a pencil mark on the window at that point. Next, measure the blind and perform the same steps.

Holding the blind headrail in position, line the two pencil marks up and have a helper mark the corners of the blind on the wall or window frame in pencil. Use the spirit level to make sure that the blind is completely level. These are the positions where you will place the brackets. Screw the brackets into place with the provided screws on the inside or outside of the window frame as applicable. Install the center bracket if one has been supplied.

Step 4 - Add Valance Clips

If your mini blind comes with a supplied valance, attach the enclosed valance clips to the blind headrail. The short side should go across the top of the headrail and the long side will face into the room.

Step 5 - Position Mini Blind

Slot the mini blind into place in the brackets then close the hinged locking mechanism to secure it in place. If the blind is particularly wide or heavy, you may need to get someone to assist you in maneuvering it into position, especially if you need to climb the stepladder to reach the brackets.

Step 6 - Finishing Touches

Clip the wand for the tilt mechanism into place then lower the blind fully to check that it functions correctly. Trim the valance slat to size and clip it into place. The cord used to raise or lower the blinds can be dangerous for pets and small children. You should always wind it up safely or use another form of childproofing. Manufacturers will normally provide recommendations on how to childproof their particular blind design.
