The success of a cookout depends entirely on the charcoal grill staying hot. To keep it hot, and to be sure all of your food is thoroughly cooked and has a wonderful flavor, follow these tips.

1. Pile it on

For starters, be sure you start with a sufficient amount of charcoal. Follow the directions exactly as stated on the bag.

2. Add in Intervals

After you get the initial charcoal going, allow about 30 minutes to pass and add some more charcoal briquettes. After you add them, open the vents on each side of your grill to allow air to circulate, and close the lid. The new charcoal will catch. Add more as needed.

3. Air Flow

When you spread out your coals, you need to leave room for air to circulate around them. If the charcoal does not get enough air, your coals will die and you will have to start all over.

4. Remove the Ashes

When dead ashes collect at the bottom of your charcoal grill, you need to empty it. If not, it will smother your burning charcoal by not allowing enough air to flow around them. There is a fixture that looks like a fan blade on the bottom. Just twist it and it will open so that you can empty it.
