Moths are one of those pests that are notorious for ruining clothes and killing plants. An effective method for cleaning all your garments and items and eliminating moths during your annual spring cleaning involves the use of ammonia. Ammonia is a harmful chemical, and it is important to take the following precautions. Ensure that your food and drink items are not exposed to ammonia. Also, wear eye protection while handling ammonia as it is capable of causing burns and even blindness in acute cases.
Soak a few cotton balls in ammonia. Place the ammonia-soaked cotton balls at the bottom of an empty mayonnaise container and leave it in spaces that are usually frequented by moths. This is an age-old method followed in households to trap these pesky insects.
Shampoo and Ammonia Mix
Mix the contents of an entire bottle of any brand of flea and tick shampoo with some ammonia. Spray the mixture on the shelves and the ceiling. Expect the moths to disappear in less than 2 days.
Complete Elimination of Moths
Throw open all doors and windows and ensure sufficient ventilation. Empty all articles from drawers, shelves, cupboards, and cabinets. Discard all food items infested with moth caterpillars or those that had been or currently are in contact with moths. This helps to control their larval forms. Salvage and keep away any unaffected food articles.
Add some ammonia to a quart of water in a bucket and mix the solution well. Dip a sponge in the solution and scrub clean all storage spaces, including drawers, shelves, cupboards, and cabinets. Dry the cleaned storage spaces by exposing them to air. Let the drawers remain pulled out for some time. Keep the doors of the cupboards, shelves, and cabinets open.
Moths frequently lay their eggs in food containers. This not only helps their larvae to grow undisturbed, but also allows them to get a good supply of food that can help them survive longer. Bring out your airtight containers and store all your unaffected food items in them. Ensure that the lids are proper. Seal your containers well and check them periodically. In case you do not have enough containers to store all your food items at once, give priority to your dry food items and store them first. Do not forget to get more airtight containers for your other food items the next time you head to the mall.
Finally, replace all your articles in their original places in shelves and cupboards.
