Making a bar stool made of bamboo is no harder than making one made from another type of wood. Bamboo is a sturdy, dependable wood which repels insects and is easy to clean. It can either be kept in its original finish, which is very light, or stained to appear darker.
Step 1 – Determine Quantity
Before you run off to buy bamboo, you need to know how many stools you want to make, and how high you want them to be. Remember to allow enough space between the seat and the underside of the counter, or people may not fit comfortably.
Step 2 – Measure
Once you’ve determined how many bar stools you want and how low or high you want them, you can measure. Take into account whether you want to add cushions because that will put the seat closer to the bar’s underside. You may need to subtract a little height from the structure.
Step 3 – Cut the Seat
The bamboo block you’re using for the seat can be a circle or a square, just as long as it’s at least 4 inches thick. For the best support, the length of the seat should be around 2 feet. Sand the bamboo if necessary to give it a smooth finish.
After you’ve cut out the seat, flip it over to the bottom and drill 4 holes into the corners. You will need to fit screws into these holes head-first, so you may need to manipulate the opening to get the head in. The bottom of the screw will be used to connect the legs, so it should be pointing down.
Step 4 – Cut the Legs
You will build the bar stool by connecting 2 sets of legs. Cut 2 strips of bamboo for one set of legs. The pieces of bamboo should be at least 3 to 4 inches thick for maximum stability. Cut 1 small piece that is the length of the seat. Repeat this procedure until you have 4 legs and 2 small pieces.
Step 5 – Glue Pieces
You will now need your wood glue to attach the pieces together. Take 2 legs and 1 small piece, and form a u-shape. Glue the small piece on both ends, place at the top of the legs and attach. Do this for both sets of legs and let the wood glue dry.
Step 6 – Install Leg Rests
After the glue has set, you can attach the leg rests. Measure the distance between the insides of the legs, and cut 2 pieces of bamboo accordingly. You can either screw these in or use wood glue.
Step 7 – Attach Legs to Seat
As you will be screwing in the legs to the seat, drill a hole into the top of each leg. Fill the hole halfway with wood glue, and attach the seat to the legs, tightening the screws until they feel no resistance.
That’s it! Let the wood dry and then gently test the stool to make sure it’s strong enough. You can add a stain or finish, and a seat cushion if you like, or just let the bamboo’s natural beauty shine through.
