How To Make A Headboard

Creating a headboard is an easy way to change the look of your bedroom without a lot of effort. There are several different ways you can design a new headboard. Here are just a few ways you can create a headboard easily with little time and money.

Curtained Headboard

For a simple and elegant headboard you can modify curtains. Install a decorative curtain rod at the maximum height you want your headboard to reach. Find sheer curtain panels that match the rest of your décor. Depending on the size of the bed you will need several sets of panels to get the right look. You will need to modify the panels at the bottom to accommodate another curtain rod. This can be done with bonding tape and an iron or a sewing machine. Make sure you measure where you want the bottom of the headboard to be and mark this out of the panels before you start modifying them. Install a matching curtain rod at the bottom and attach the curtains. Play around with them until you get the folds in the panels the way you want them.

Tiled Headboard

You can get a great mosaic look by using simple peel and stick vinyl tiles. Measure out and cut a piece of plywood. You want this to be no more than one inch wider than your bed, and you can make it as tall as you’d like. Paint the plywood to match or coordinate the color of the walls in your room. This will help to create a more uniform look for the headboard.

Purchase interesting tiles in the size and shape you want. It’s much easier if you find the linoleum tiles that are peel and stick. This will take a lot of the weight off of the headboard. You can find these at any hardware supply or home improvement store. Lay the tiles out until you find a pattern you like, and then peel the back off and stick the panels in place.

Once your headboard is done you can hang it on the wall. Try to attach it to the studs for added security.

Reclaiming Old Furniture

You can create a completely unique and one of a kind headboard by reclaiming old items you may have around. Old cabinets make great headboards if you refinish them and add some shelves above them. Old folding doors can be cut down and painted to create headboards with a more modern geometric look. You can even use a mix of old picture frames to create a meaningful and interesting look.
