A lattice panel is a great way to create privacy as well as some protection. A lattice panel is often used to create tall privacy fences but they can also be used on decks. You can create a lattice panel as a deck fence in a single afternoon. The following article will show you how to build a lattice panel deck fence and how to install it.
Step 1 – Measurements
You can purchase a lattice panel in various sizes but most, if not all, will be too large for your deck fence. You can put lattice panels between the floor of the deck and the top railing but it can also be used from the bottom of the deck to the ground. This type of install is used to keep animals and children from crawling under the deck. Regardless of the purpose for the lattice panel fence you need the measurements. Determine the height of the space to cover. You will when want the length from of each side.
Step 2 – Cutting
To avoid a lot of cutting you can purchase lattice panel segments that are long enough to cover an entire side. This prevents you from having to purchase several sections and then piecing them together. The main thing you need to worry about is the height of the panel. Transfer the height measurement to the panel you are going to cut. Use the miter saw to carefully cut through the lattice panel. If you cut too quickly you can destroy the wood. Use an even and firm cut using medium pressure. After the piece has been cut; sand down the cut edges with the sanding block. You can then dry fit the piece and check for coverage. Adjust the lattice panel as needed.
Step 3 – Staining
Since you are dealing with wood and a wood deck it is a good idea to stain or paint the lattice panel. It is much easier to do prior to fastening it to the deck. Choose a stain or paint that you like and then use a paintbrush to apply it. Wait until the initial layer dries and then stain it again. If the lattice panel is being installed as a fence on the livable portion of the deck then stain both sides. If it is being used to cover the opening under the deck then only stain the side that will be facing out.
Sep 4 – Attach the Lattice Panel
This has to be done with each panel you will be using and is also the easiest part of the project. Hold the panel up to the deck so that the top edge hits the bottom of the railing or the floor of the deck. Hold it in place and hammer in a nail through the lattice panel and into the railing upright or deck post. Place a nail through the lattice panel where the wood crosses and is over a post. Attach each panel in this fashion until finished.
