If you are a musician or sound recorder, it may be a good idea to build a soundproof booth for your home. This can save you both time and money, especially if you have to pay to rent your usual recording studio. At home, you must take special care to insulate your space from both ambient neighborhood noise, but also ringing phones and the sounds of your family. Follow the steps below to successfully build and soundproof your own recording or listening booth.
Step 1: Plan
The first thing to do to determine the place that will be most suitable for your soundproof booth. Any unused corner of your room can do the job. For maximum soundproofing, consider a quiet space without much traffic, like part of a basement, garage, work shed or attic.
Consider the dimensions of the space you have, and make a plan with measurements.
Step 2: Frame the walls
Start framing out the walls of the booth with the help of the 4x4 boards. Follow the design you created in Step 1.
Step 3: Fix the Door
Fix the ready-to-use door in the frames. Check its functionality and the knob.
Step 4: Attach the Drywall
Put the drywall on the outer part of the frame. Use screws to fix it in place.
Step 5: Insert the Fiberglass Padding
Put the fiberglass padding into the wooden frame. Keep in mind that every gap must be completely filled so that no noise can enter into the cabinet.
Step 6: Place the Drywall on the Interior Section
Attach the drywall on the interior side of the frame. Fasten it with screwdriver.
Step 7: Make Holes
Use a drill machine to make some holes in the wall where you will install signal cables. Set up all the cables required for your booth and recording or other sound equipment.
Step 8: Seal the Gaps
Seal every gap you see in the cabinet with the help of silicone caulk.
Step 9: Fix the Weather Stripping
On the frame of the door, fix the weather stripping and dense seal. Check every part of the frame for remaining gaps. Also check whether the door still functions with all the extra material in place.
Step 10: Fix a Microphone
Check whether all the signal cables are working properly or not. Fix a microphone, and you are done.
