How to Make Home Theater Floor Plans

What You'll Need
Design software

Home theater floor plans can be made based on your preferences. A simple home theater floor plan can consist of setting up a few folding chairs, positioning speakers and placing a popcorn machine in the room for a quick and easy home theater room. The room can also be more elaborately designed with specifically designed theater chairs with arm cushions and cup holders, built on risers to create levels and glow lights to illuminate the exit and seating path.

However you choose to create your home theater experience, it all starts with a plan. Making a plan requires gathering your ideas, putting them on paper and arranging them until you come up with a design that fits your desire for a home theater.

Step 1: Sketch Ideas on Paper

The easiest way to get started when designing or making a home theater floor plan is to sketch your ideas on paper with a pencil. This will give you the freedom of coming up with different design styles without having to worry about adjusting for scale or actual dimensions. You can experiment with drawing levels or placing chairs or other seating in your home theater floor plan design and see what works best.

Step 2: Purchase Floor Planning Software

Purchase floor plan software that will help you put your plan into a visual concept that can be viewed and manipulated on your computer. This software can be downloaded or purchased from a software store. Find software that is intuitive and easy to use. This will help you learn how to use it is faster and turn your drawings into actual floor plans.

You may also be able to find shareware or freeware that allows you to create a limited number of plan designs. This software may be sufficient for use by a non-professional and is the right price for your one time or occasional floor planning.

Step 3: Create Different Plans

Using the software, transfer the objects that you drew on the paper to the computer. The software will allow you to play with dimensions and spacing so you will be able to easily move objects around and within the floor plan design and also obtain a 3-D representation. Add seating at different levels and rotate the view to observe the floor plan from different angles and perspectives. Make changes as needed and make different floor plan design plans.

Step 4: Print Plans and Implement

Print copies of the different plans that you create and compare them. You should have created a good visual representation of different home theater floor plan designs, positioning the screen, projector and seating in various places and from various vantage points. The plan that appeals to your personal style the most should be the plan that you go with.

The software may also provide you with a materials list to make it easier to obtain the items needed for your home theater and create a checklist of what is needed to convert the space.
