Pomegranate tea is a tasty way to receive the nutritional benefits of this unique fruit. Pomegranate is believed to help with cardiovascular health and contains many vitamins and antioxidants. Pomegranate tea is made by combining pomegranate juice with freshly made tea. Which kind of tea you make depends on your tastes. Black, green, and herbal teas all work.
Step 1 – Separating the Seeds from the Pomegranate
Pomegranate tea can be made with store purchased juice, but if pomegranates are available it can be worth it to make your own juice. If you make the juice yourself there will be no preservatives.
Picking the seeds from a pomegranate is a long and messy task. A trick to make it easier is to break the pomegranate up in a bowl of water. The seeds will settled to the bottom of the bowl while the white rind will float to the top. Just pick the rind apart to release the seeds.
Step 2 – Juice the Seeds
Remove the rind from the bowl and throw it out. Strain the seeds from the bowl and place them in a blender. Pulse the blender until the seeds are well pulped. Be careful to avoid splashing because Pomegranate stains are tough to remove.
Step 3 – Strain the Juice
Pour the seeds and pulp from the blender into some kind of strainer. Cheese cloth, or a nut bag make squeezing the juice out easier than a metal strainer. Squeeze the pulp to release the juice into your bowl or pitcher.
Step 4 – Prepare the Tea
Most teas—such as black and green mix well with Pomegranate juice. For a calming effect, consider chamomile tea. You can also try to combine it with peppermint or lemongrass. Feel free to experiment.
Boil 6 to 8 oz. of water. Pour the water over the tea, either loose leaf or bagged. Allow tea to steep up to 15 minutes to get a strength that will stand up to the addition of the pomegranate juice. Remove the bags or strain out the leaves when the tea has steeped long enough.
Step 5 – Add the Pomegranate Juice
Add the juice to the tea. The amount of juice will vary depending on your taste and the type of tea you use. Add a sweetener if the taste is a little too tangy for your preferences.
Try Pomegranate Iced Tea
This refreshing tea is excellent as an iced beverage in hot weather. Steep the tea a little longer and allow it to cool to room temperature. Pour the tea and juice mix over ice and serve. Garnishments often served with pomegranate iced tea are mint and lemon.
