How to Make Practice Drum Pads

What You'll Need
Dense foam
Compass (optional)
Utility knife
Pair of leather gloves
Tape (double-sided)
Rubber cement (optional)

From rock bands to school bands, they both have drummers and what do drummers need, practice drum pads. There is one thing that makes a drummer good at what they do and that is practice. But drums can be noisy and loud and you certainly can’t play at 4am morning or your neighbors may have something to say about that. But what if there was a way to please everyone, the neighbors get to sleep, and the drummer gets to practice without disturbing everyone else around them. With just a few supplies, our drummer friends can be on their way to practicing their hearts out. Below are the steps to be followed.

Step 1 – Take Measurements

The first thing you need to do is to take a measurement of the pads on your drums. You will need to know how big your circles will be. You will also need to stop where the grey part of the drum pad ends.

Step 2 – Preparing the Foam

Now that you have your measurements, you can draw the circles on the foam. You must be accurate. Once the circles are drawn, you can begin to cut them out using the utility knife. You need to wear the gloves for protection and go extremely slow. As you cut the material, keep it tight and this will give you a much better cut.

Step 3 – Using Tape

Now that you have the pads cut out, take the tape and carefully stick each pad to the drum pad. Once those are taped down, turn on the game and test the drums to see if the pads are working correctly. This is a good time to check and be sure the color is not blocked by the pad. You may need to trim off some of the excess if there is any.

Step 4 – Finishing Touches

This is the time to do any trimming that needs to be done on the pads. Then you can take and put some glue around the edges of the pad. This is the hardest part of the pad to secure to the drum. You must press firmly and hold it down for approximately one minute to allow the glue to dry.

Now that you have learned how to make your own practice drum pads, you can concentrate on doing what you do best. For very little money and very little time, you were able to create something very useful for you and your friends. These pads can be used on the game drum or on drums for a band. Now you don’t have to worry about bothering the neighbors or keeping your family awake. You can play for as long as you want to and get as much practice as you possibly can. So have fun, learn some songs and have a great time.
