How to Make RV Roof Sealant

RV roof sealant is used to repair the damages in small places in RV roofs. Regular repairs are required to avoid permanent damage. Liquid rubber sealants are used to plug most of the small leaks. Liquid Roof is one of the most used sealants for rubber roofing repairs. This product is composed of EPDM rubber. It is the same material which is used to fabricate the rubber membrane for RV roofs but in liquid form.

Materials and Tools

Catalyst
Masking tape
Butyl Tape
Rubber patch
Scrubber
Mixing drill
Bucket
5-inch putty knife
Brush

Step 1: Initial Preparation

Clean the roof with a wire brush to scrape away all patches of material and caulking. Sweep the surface with a broom. Blow off any dust. Clean any stains or dirt with a scrubber and a mixture bleach and water. Remove any metal edges found.

If there is a heavy tear, seam it with an adhesive Butyl Tape. Seal the smaller holes with a rubber patch available in the market.

Seal any gutter points and cover the periphery of the roof with masking tape.

Step 2: Mixing the Sealant

Ensure that the temperature is above 55 degree Fahrenheit; otherwise the sealant will not cure. Put the Liquid Roof rubber in a bucket and stir it with a drill mixer. Add the catalyst to it. The catalyst makes the curing faster and increases adhesion. Stir it for 10 minutes. Check that the mixture is thicker than paint.

Step 3: Activating the Catalyst

Leave the sealant for about half an hour so that the catalyst activates.

Step 4: Applying the Sealant

Spread the sealant on the area where it is to be applied. Use a 5-inch putty knife and a brush or roller to apply the sealant. It should be preferably applied in a single attempt only. Let the material dry and cure. Remove the masking tape when the coating is set.
