How to Make Sidelight Curtains
Sidelight curtains are an ideal addition to further complement the sidelights installed in your home. This will not only add a dose of beauty and appeal to the entire design theme but will also serve a useful function to add a dose of privacy to your home. Sidelight curtains are easy to make and you can choose the fabric of your choice that will blend well with the aesthetics of your home.
While some home owners prefer to install window tint on the sidelights, curtains will allow you to either cover or open the sidelights to allow moderate amounts of light to pass through. You can also install ribbons and other curtain garnishing to create a more authentic look.
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Sewing machine
- Fabric of choice
- Thread
- Sash rods
- Sash brackets
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Step 1 – Measure the Fabric and Cut According to Desired Size
Use a measuring tape to measure the dimensions of the sidelight. Lay the fabric on a table and measure according to size. Keep in mind to add at least 6 inches to the overall height of the sidelight as this is a provision for the top and bottom hems. The width of the fabric should be at least 1½ to 2 times wider than the original width of the sidelight. This will help create fullness when installed along the sash rods. Use a sharp pair of fabric scissors to cut the fabric according to size.
Step 2 – Sew the Fabric
Use the sewing machine to make a narrow hem along the edges of the panel. Next, fold the top edge panel at least 1½ inches and press lightly. Fold the edge again with the same 1½ inch thickness and stitch the hem starting from the bottom edge of the fold.
Run stitches at least ¼ inch from the top edge of the curtain. Run another row of stitches one inch from the first row to create a rod pocket for the top side of the curtain. Repeat the same steps for the bottom edge to create a rod pocket as well.
Step 3 – Mount the Curtain
Mount the sash brackets at least 2 to 3 inches above and below the sidelight window. You may need to use a drill and some screws to properly mount the brackets. Grab the sash rods and run them through the top and bottom pockets of the curtain and then place them on the sash brackets. Arrange the curtain to produce an even fullness across the window. Pull or bunch together the top and bottom part of the curtain to create a unique look. You may add ribbons to create a more elegant or feminine look. Gather the curtain at the middle and tie a ribbon to secure the curtain in place.
You can exercise your creativity by choosing fabrics with patterns or different color combinations to create an entirely unique and attractive look to any part of the house. If the sidelight curtains become dirty, you can simply throw them in the washing machine. Iron the curtain after washing.
