How to Make Winter Flower Wreaths for Doors

Flower wreaths may be used on various occasions and even for the winter holidays. They may be the perfect decoration for doors. Wreaths are popular during the winter holidays and you can use tree branches, ribbons and flowers.

Tools and Materials:

  • Flowers
  • A wreath  frame
  • Floral wire
  • Leaves, branches or twigs
  • Glue
  • Ribbons and bows
  • A pair of scissors
  • Dry cleaner’s wire hangers
  • Pine cones, dry fruits, cinnamon sticks
  • Christmas decorations or small figurines

Step 1 – Choose Your Frame

The wreath frame is the starting point of making a flower wreath. You can choose frames made of wire, styrofoam, grapewine or florist foam. These frames may be found in craft shops. For a flower wreath, the best option is florist foam, as this will keep the flowers fresh for longer. You will need to wet the wreath regularly.

If you want to make the wreath yourself, get some wire hangers and bend 2 of these into a circular shape. Wire the 2 hangers together.

Step 2 – Place the Base Covering

The base covering will cover the wreath frame. The base can be made up of flower leaves, pine tree branches or twigs. For winter, evergreen branches are ideal.

Place 1 branch and glue it to the frame. If you are using wire frames, you can use floral wire to put the branches or leaves into place.

Place additional branches or leaves, making sure to cover the entire frame. Overlap the branches.

Trim the outstanding branches with a pair of scissors.

Step 3 – Place the Flowers

Get your winter flowers and wire them on the branches. You can use your creativity to create a pattern. Typically, symmetrical, evenly spaced flower arrangements will have a classy look, but you don’t have to arrange the flowers symmetrically.

Step 4 – Place Other Decorations

You may also want to add some other decorations to the winter wreath. These can be pine cones, dry fruit, cinnamon sticks, Christmas decorations, ribbons, bows or other small figurines made of clay, plastic or wood.

Make sure you only place a few decorations, as the main theme of the wreath is flowers and overcrowded wreaths are not as appealing as simple wreaths.

Use glue or floral wire to attach the decorations to the wreath.

If a certain decoration is larger, you can glue this to a piece of wire first and then wire the decoration to the wreath, using a twist tie. Alternatively, you can make a hole into the decoration, pass the wire through the hole and attach the decoration to the wreath.

Step 5 – Hide the Visible Wire

If you find pieces of wire that are visible, hide these under the base covering. You may use some glue and place additional leaves or branches to cover the wire.

Step 6 – Check the Wreath

Before hanging the wreath, you will need to check if all the decorations are in place and make sure they won’t fall. Shake the wreath and see if the decorations stay put.
